The easy, cynical answer would be narcissism, but some people may also be attempting to get more easily noticed by the algorithm by maximizing the amount the likes they get, often by liking their own stuff to get the ball rolling. It’s like how, when I was more active on YouTube as a teen, I was getting all these offers to buy bots to like and comment on my stuff so that YouTube’s algorithm (already a pain in the early 2010’s) would be more likely to recommend my stuff to people who would enjoy it.
I don’t know if such tactics would work on a site like Newgrounds, though. Thankfully, this may be the only site where the amount of attention I get is dependent on me simply producing good art that takes weeks or even months to make. If anything, it punishes me for using low-effort memes to promote my stuff.
